Thomas Henry Scribner, Sr. Thomas H Scribner Sr., peacefully went home to his lord on March 4th 2018. Thomas was born October 22, 1926 to Mary (Adams) Scribner and Gilbert A Scribner Sr., and was the oldest of 4 children.

Thomas was a WWII Veteran enlisting into the US Navy as a baker in 1942 at the age of 16 and served for 5 years. In 1947 Thomas enlisted again into the US Army as a cook serving until 1966. After his time in the Armed Forces, Thomas and his family moved to Gary, Indiana where he worked for Bethlehem Steel until an explosion at the mill caused him to retire early with disability. He was a Chaplin and Post Commander for American Legion Post 219 in Gary as well as a member of VFW Post 988 in Valparaiso, Indiana.

In 1979 Thomas moved back to Des Moines to be closer to family. Besides working with his brother, William, as delivery driver and tech for B J's Vending he also worked for the Coca Cola Company and Smart Industries where he was an assembly line foreman until retirement in 1991. He loved the Chicago Bears and the Cubs and was an avid bowler, participating in many leagues throughout the year at Plaza Lanes. He also had an enormous collection of baseball caps.

Thomas was preceded in death by his father, Gilbert Alonza Scribner Sr; his mother, Mary Eugenia Scribner; his wife of 40 years, A. Esther Scribner; his son, James (Jimi) Robert Scribner; and his sister, Barbara Ann (Scribner) Gainey of Hampton, VA.

He is survived by his brothers, Gilbert A Scribner Jr. (Doreen) of Spencer, IA and William J Scribner (Judy) of Des Moines; his daughters, Clara Jean Floyd (Robert), Mary Jane Henderson (Carroll), and Theresa Lynn Scribner (Ralph), all of Des Moines; his sons, Thomas H Scribner Jr (Sharon) of Newington, GA and Charles D Scribner of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

Celebration of Life will be held at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter.
