Shirley J. (Grubb) Jackson, 52, passed away Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born February 9, 1959, in Des Moines, the daughter of Clayton and Mary (Finney) Grubb.
Shirley worked for the State of Iowa in the Department of Corrections for ICIW making a difference in many lives. She was a member of AFSME Union 0451. Shirley enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with her daughter and nine grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by her former husband, Robert Jackson, Sr.; daughter, Kendra Jackson of Altoona, IA; step-daughter, Amy (Shawn) Swope of Wenatchee, WA; step-son, Robert Jackson, Jr. of Ankeny, IA; nine grandchildren; sisters, Mary Gean of Phoenix, AZ; Janet (Charlie) Moen of Pleasantville, IA; Carol Grubb of Lawrence, KS; and Linda (Dan) Busick of Russell, IA; brothers, Clayton (Polly) Grubb, Jr. of Des Moines, IA; George Grubb of Boone, IA; and Larry (Melinda) Grubb of Des Moines, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Kenneth and James Grubb.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, July 22, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family in loving memory of Shirley.

Wow, I just found out that one of my long lost friends has passed awaay.
I was very sad to hear of Shirleys passing.
It has been years since I have seen her, but I will never forget her
smile and her laugh, both came very easy for her. She was a good friend
to me back in the day. I lost touch with her in 1979/80 but NEVER forgot
her.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, she was a wonderful lady!!!!

We are very sorry for your loss. We knew Shirley when she was a bartender at Anthony's Lounge. She was a great lady and will be missed.

Kendra you are a very Awesome young lady and your mother was very blessed to have such a wonderful daughter!! I thank everyday I took that walk that day in the park with you & your Mom, me and her had great times together at work saddens me how fast things take a person away from loved ones, she who is gone, but cherish her memory, Hold tight to memories for comfort. Lean on your friends for strength, and always remember how much you are cared about. As you comprehend this profound loss, let yourself cry knowing each tear is a note of love rising to the heavens.
Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in time of sorrow.
And you should always know, wherever you may go, No matter where you are, She will never be far away Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. In the night of death, hope sees a star, and listening love can hear the rustle of a wing. May you take comfort in knowing an angel is watching over you.

What a smile she had. It easily warmed up any room she walked into. She loved to laugh, visit, share, and cared about all she came into contact with. Rest in peace Shirley! Heaven gained a wonderful angel.

Aunt Shirley, I will always remember the good times I had with you...from the hayrack rides, to apple river, and even the time I got lost in your neighborhood and you had to come searching for me. I will cherish the days you would babysit my sister and me. I know we weren't always the easiest children to get along with!! You were an amazing aunt, and an even more amazing mother! I will miss you more then you will ever know, but I know you are now in heaven with your brothers and mom and dad! I also know you are no longer in pain, and now you will be able to watch over all of us!! I love you so so much! May you rest in peace!

we lost a beautiful lady to heaven but i know i will see her again someday i will love her forever.shes not just my best friend but also my baby sister. a big thank you to kendra and david for the wonderful care you gave to her. im so thankful for the time all of us family members spent with her these past few months .i feal so blessed to have been her sister.i will love her forever and always think of her .

Shirley, I wish that we had had the time to know eachother better, but I am so blessed to have know you for such little time. I the last time I saw you, you were so concerned to for if I only knew that it was you that needed that time, but I am guessing that is how you were in life always concerned with other leaving yourself last. Thank you for being in my life for the time that we did have.

Shirley, I will always remember the fun times we all had together. From Apple River, our Canoe Trips (from which I swear you literally saved our lives that day) The many many Friday and Saturday nights where we played cards. No one would be my partner except you. And I will especially remember your homemade biscuits, and boiled cookies. You will be dearly missed by all who knew you. Love you Shirley Joe

Cousin Shirley I remember growing up and the times I saw you, I thought you and Linda were so cool! I smile thinking of our talks which I wish we had more of...I will miss you dearly...Thanks for the many hugs and smiles we shared. I pray foryiur family...Kendra is amazing...you raised her that way. We all love you and know where you are cancer does not exist. God bless you and your family!

I really can't remember the last time I saw Shirley, but every time someone mentions her name, or for some reason I end up thinking about her, I see her in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. During the summer we lived there, Shirley and Linda came to visit, and I can still see them running through the big backyard in swimming suits, trying to keep our goat, Ambrose Bierce, from eating the pages out of their journals and magazines.
They were eleven and twelve year olds who looked like young colts just turned out to pasture, as they ran and jumped and hooped and hollared, all the time pretending that they were not deliberately feeding that goat. Niki, Dustin, and Laura, being too young to keep up with them, tagged along behind as Shirley and Linda yelled, the goat munched, and the kids laughed until they could stand no longer, then just rolling on the ground.
What a nice way to remember someone.
