Shirley N. Smith

Shirley N. Smith was born June 29, 1927 to Marion and Beulah (Bogue) Crawford in Des Moines, Iowa. She graduated from Renwick High School in 1945 and attended and graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Music Education degree. She met her husband, Kenneth, while at Drake. They were married in 1949. Shirley taught special music in the Des Moines public schools for 31 years. After retirement in 1981, Ken spent more time as an artist and they traveled to art shows together.

Shirley’s hobbies were reading, crossword puzzles, crafts, and stitchery of all kinds, especially knitting and needlepoint. She was noted for her “paintings in yarn”. She volunteered at the Iowa State Fair, Planned Parenthood Book Sale, Festival of Trees, and the Des Moines Women’s Club, where she was an active member for many years.

Shirley passed away Sunday, September 21, 2014 at The Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa at the age of 87. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Ken, in 2012.

Services will be held Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Capitol Hill Lutheran Church, 511 Des Moines Street, Des Moines, 50309. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with funeral service scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. Inurnment will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Capitol Hill Lutheran Church or to the Des Moines Women’s Club, 1501 Woodland Avenue, Des Moines, IA, 50309.
