Harriet W. Johnson Anderson
Des Moines

Harriet W. Johnson Anderson, 95, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Taylor House Hospice following a brief hospitalization. Harriet was born in Deadwood, SD on March 22, 1920 to Ellen Dodge Dyer Johnson, a school teacher, and Harry Johnson, a musician. After her parents divorced, Harriet and her mother returned to Iowa. Her mother then married Edwin Johnson, a Swedish immigrant coal miner and widower with two children, Ellen (Miles) of Kansas City and Margaret (Holmberg), who preceded Harriet in death, as have the younger siblings, Harold and Lillian (Banta).

Harriet graduated from Melcher-Dallas high school and married Rupert “Andy” Anderson in 1938. They celebrated their 76th anniversary before Andy died in July, 2014. She is survived by their daughter Corinne Whitlatch, grandson Kirk Whitlatch and his wife Kimberly, granddaughter Amy Whitlatch Gillum and her husband Chuck, her sister Ellen and nieces and nephews. She especially loved watching her great-grandchildren become young adults. Haley and Angeleah “Leah” Whitlatch and Hunter and Rose Gillum brought the greatest joy to her life.

Harriet and Andy built Vista Kennels which she managed and where they raised and showed boxer dogs and were active in the Des Moines Kennel Club. For the last 20 years, Kirk and his family have lived next door, taking care of the kennel. She loved flowers, did exquisite needlepointing, was a terrific cook, a good friend and mentor and greatly enjoyed her church. Harriet celebrated her 95th birthday at home with her family last Sunday, enjoying ice cream cake and the many cards she received.
