Emily Brynne Brown
July 21, 2015
Emily Brown, age 38, was uplifted to the Lord on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, due to complications from metastasized breast cancer. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 26 from 5-8 pm at Hamilton’s at 3601Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Funeral service will be held on Monday, July 27 at 11:00 am at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1528 East University Avenue in Des Moines.
Emily was born on May 16, 1977 in Des Moines, Iowa to Kay and Jim Brown. Her life was defined by an amazing generosity of heart, time, and talent that touched everyone she met.
This could be seen through her music. Since playing in the sixth grade band, Emily had a strong passion for creating and sharing the gift of song. Whether leading guitar lessons for work colleagues or being moved by the spirit in church, her voice and personality filled the room and bound people in love.
Likewise, her sharing of energy, intellect and openness were always a constant on the job. Throughout her career in IT whether figuring out how to set up the network and servers at her first job or managing the development of mobile apps at Nationwide, Em had an amazing intellect and drive to solve, simplify and explain complex IT concepts.
As a Christian sister, Em shined as a bright light both as a member of Bethel AME and as a witness to the wonders of Christ’s love up to her time of passing. Her beliefs shaped the openness, sense of equality, and grace that she brought to every situation.
Emily is survived by her mother, Karen "Kay" Brown; her brother Stephen Brown; Kristina, Nick and other relatives and close friends. She was preceded in death by her father Jim Brown; grandparents, Mary and Quentin Johnson and Franklyn and Esther Brown; and friend Julia Kading.
In memory of Em, memorial contributions may be given to Bethel AME Church (betheldsm.com) or the Electronic Frontier Foundation (eff.org) in lieu of flowers. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com.

Kay and family -
I am so sorry to hear of Emily's passing. Although I only had the opportunity to meet her after she was diagnosed - I saw how wonderful of a person she is and how her energy and excitement consumed the room. I felt as though we were kindred spirits, both having May birthdays and living on Raymond drive. Emily will always and forever be one of my favorites. Pati Berger, RN.

Oh, Em! I have loved watching you grow up! I've enjoyed your music and journeys through life. Every time we visited you reminded me that you always wanted to be like me and drive a car like mine. Well, now I'm looking into getting a car like yours! And I am trying to be more like you! You had such a great attitude and outlook on life. You are going to be greatly missed by all the lives you have touched. Your spirit lives on and on. Hugs!

I wish to offer my deepest sympathy for the loss of your daughter. Comfort from the Holy Scriptures assures you that God is near to those who are broken at heart and crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18) Draw close to God thru prayer, and he will draw close to and sustain you. (James 4:8)

Our memories of Emily go back to her birth! A beautiful "easy" child...always smiling and so easy to love...these qualities carried into adulthood with "Miss Em"....."family" memories we shared and those that will never be forgotten. Our dear Lord called you home far too soon Miss Emily....your loss leaves a void.....but memories are very powerful!!! Our Love...The Edwards

Emily was one of the first people whom I met when I started at Nationwide. She had such a welcoming presence about her and the first question she asked me was, "Hawkeye or Cyclone?" I said, "Hawkeye of course!" And our friendship grew from there.
Emily had such high expectations and passion with everything she touched. She inspired and continues to inspire me and I am forever thankful that she was part of my life.
I was able to meet Em's mom one late night at hospice. Kay is an amazing person and I can see a lot of Emily in her. She did what Em did best...she listened. What an amazing family.
God bless you Emily Brown.

I miss you already Em (aka Em-i-memily). I can't believe we had to say good-bye so soon. Too soon. Yet nothing could ever diminish the absolute joy of knowing you. My pal, confidant, fellow Ani lover, and a true friend. Give Julia a big hug for me.

I was blessed to be Emilys desk buddy at Nationwide while we worked on several projects over the past few years. Sharing a desk with Emily was like having my own personal comedian. She made me laugh. She made the team laugh.
When she first shared her health situation with me, we both shed a few tears. Then in some unexpected way, she managed to make us both chuckle go figure.
On April Fools Day, our kids woke up, looked out the front window, and our yard was covered with pink flamingos. Emily flocked us overnight complete with a yard sign and QR code. Even when Emily was not feeling well, she made others smile.
Im very grateful to have known Emily.
