Darlene J. (Zellmer) Shepherd, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2015 on her 81st birthday. She was born to Hugo John Zellmer and Wilma Alice (Jensen) Zellmer in Muscatine, Iowa. She attended schools in Muscatine. She married John B. Shepherd, Jr. on June 27, 1954 and they lived their married life in Des Moines, Iowa.
Darlene worked for MidAmerican Baptist Churches from January 16, 1978 to August 30, 1994 as their bookkeeper and office manager. She retired in 1994. She was a member of Eastern Star Des Moines Chapter 89 since 1973 and served as Worthy Grand Matron of Iowa in 1996.
She is survived by her loving daughters, Victoria “Vicki” Shepherd and Theresa “Terri” Cooper (Tim); grandchildren, Thomas John Thieme (Melissa) and Emily Jean “Sweet Pea” Thieme; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Cooper and Kelsey Rosener (Ray); great-grandchildren, Rylee Victoria Thieme, Shelby Nichole Thieme, and Maxton John Danger Thieme; brother, Ralph Zellmer; step-brother, David Stambro; and her dog and best friend, Sunny.
Darlene was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, John; her parents, Hugo and Wilma; her brother, Donald Zellmer; and her step-sister, Joyce Stambro.
Per her request, cremation has occurred and there will be no formal service. Please join the family for a luncheon to celebrate Darlene’s life to be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Greater Des Moines, 8250 NW 62nd Ave., Johnston, IA 50131.
Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church where Darlene was a lifelong member. They may also be given to On with Life, 715 SW Ankeny Rd., Ankeny, IA 50023, for their assistance in 2010 when John had a massive stroke and their care returned him home to his family.
A heartfelt thank you to all family and friends for their support over the years.

Vicki & Terri - Myself, Kurt and Kirsten, are so sorry for your loss. I remember your Mom, thinking about how l thought she had such inventive ideas decorating the house on 57th and her taking me to school in her Isetta. I was so impressed with the door opening in the front.
