Nellie Morrow
Des Moines

Mrs. Nellie Jane Morrow, 92, was born May 26, 1923, in Des Moines, Iowa to James and Lottie Jones. She departed this life on Tuesday, September 29, 2015. She attended the public school system of Des Moines and graduated from East High School in Des Moines, Iowa in 1942.

Nellie met the love of her life, Orsel Morrow, at Corinthian Baptist Church. From this union 3 children were born. Mom and Dad were a match made in heaven. 67 years of marriage to Oz (Orsel) Morrow – what a blessing! Our parents were the fourth couple to reign as the Iowa Juneteenth King and Queen, serving from 1997 to 1998. They were named to the honorary Iowa Juneteenth Council of Kings and Queens, where their names will remain.

Nellie worked for many years and retired from Amoco Oil Company 1990. She was a lifelong member of Corinthian Baptist Church and was the founder of the “Greeters Ministry.” She was the most beautiful, elegant greeter of all. God truly blessed Nellie for 92 years. She lived a full and happy life, was never sick or hospitalized until her 90s, loved to work out and was able to enjoy the John R. Grubb YMCA until the age of 90. She was very impressive on all exercise machines!

Nellie’s love was so special, she always had open arms, kind and loving words. Our home was filled with lots of laughter and enjoyment in our childhood, which carried into our adulthood. Her love for God, her church, her beauty, elegance, charm, wit, peace, tenderness, and unconditional love describe the precious profile of Nellie. She was like no other mother. She loved her three kids equally. We were all special and she never spoke an unkind word about her children. Our upbringing was full of love and she displayed peace in the home - no arguments and wonderful home cooked meals daily. What an awesome cook!

Nellie was always so proud of her children and grandchildren. She loved hearing of their many victories. She was able to meet her first great-grandbaby, Zahra, and the arrival of her second great-grandbaby, Julian Morrow (just born), filled her with glee.

Nellie was never a lover of dogs, but when Spencer the Yellow Lab came into the picture, he had a special place in her heart. He always knew he could go to Grammy for special human treats that he wasn’t allowed at his house.

Nellie is survived by her husband of 67 years, Orsel Sr.; sons, Orsel Jr. and Rickie (Collette); daughter, Shelly Morrow Bagby (Henry); siblings, Lorraine Harris, Delores Young, and Delbert Jones; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends.

Thank you, Latricia Holliman, for the loving care given to our mother in her final year. Thank you, Dr. Robert Shires, for the special home visits accompanied by yummy chocolates. Thank you to her church family, Rev. Jonathan Whitfield, and many members and friends that called, visited, and sent kind messages and prayer.

We have a lot to be thankful for. Our wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, and mother-in-law will be truly missed but not forgotten.
