Merlin G. Smith

Merlin Smith, 75, passed away on November 24, 2015, at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born in Des Moines on July 27, 1940, the son of Melvin and Marjorie (Fraaken) Smith.
Merlin proudly served in the United States Air Force until his honorable discharge. He worked for and later owned the family business, Melvin O. Smith and Son Ditching, in Des Moines. He was united in marriage to Sandra Brown and later married Barbra Janes.
Merlin is survived by his children, Mike (Mary) Smith and Melissa Sassman (Steve Ponsetto); stepdaughter, Stacy Loftus (Jeff Arends); grandchildren, Steven, Stephine, Jerad, Grant, Molle, Jake, Joe, Bert, and Ana; as well as his mother, Marjorie Smith. He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2015, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive visitors Sunday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Many fond memories of times with the Smith family in the 1960's. Merlin was a very early riser and a hard worker. I always admired how tan he was. Now he claims his just reward. Peace and comfort be with his family.

Heaven is rejoicing with Merlin's return home, but sadness in many hearts for his leaving us here on earth. Eric loved Merlin for his kindness, guidance and friendship over the years. He will be greatly missed. RIP Merlin and know you touched so many lives who will miss you every day until we meet again.
