Lance was born in Des Moines, Iowa on September 13, 1942. He was the son of Clarence (Bud) Cardwell Marchael, Jr. and Dorothy (Waterbury) Marchael. His father was killed in action in World War II a few months after Lance was born. Several years later, Lance was adopted by Jim Faust, his mother’s second husband.
Jim was in the Army and the family moved often during Lance’s childhood. He graduated from high school in Mannheim, Germany and returned to Des Moines to attend Drake University.

After graduating from college, Lance joined the Air Force and spent seven years on active duty. During that time he served two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded two Bronze Stars and two Air Force Commendation Medals. Upon returning to Des Moines, he spent much of his career continuing to serve our country and the state of Iowa. Lance served as the Director of Highway Safety during former Governor Robert Ray’s administration. He also served in the Iowa Air National Guard, retiring after 21 years of military service in 1986 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Because of health issues he was forced to retire early and led a quiet life for the last two decades.

Lance is survived by his wife Gloria, his daughter Nicole (Matt) Strait, two grandchilden, a sister Chris (Dan) Wood, and numerous extended family members.
