Evelyn Hayes
West Des Moines

Evelyn Hayes, age 92, passed away Wednesday morning, July 27, 2016 at the Lodge of Ashworth in West Des Moines, where she had lived independently for the past fourteen years. She was born to Merle and Vivian Ferguson on April 13, 1924 in Des Moines, Iowa. The family moved to Osceola, Iowa for her early school years. She graduated from East High School in Des Moines, and then received her degree from Drake University. She was an elementary teacher in Elkhart and then in the Des Moines School district. Evelyn married William C. Hayes in 1949 and left her job to raise their four children. She and her family spent 1967 through 1986 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa while William was manager of the Younkers store there. Upon retirement, they moved back to Des Moines to be near their extended family. She and William celebrated 56 years of marriage before his passing.

Evelyn was a good sport in taking up fishing and golf to spend time with her husband, and also enjoyed bowling and playing bridge. She grew up in the Christian church and was a longtime member of St Paul’s Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and the West Des Moines United Methodist Church. She was a very loving daughter, wife, and mother and we will miss her caring spirit.

Evelyn is survived by three children, Susan (William E.) Taber, Gregory Hayes, and Robert (Elizabeth) Hayes. In addition she is survived by her eight grandchildren, in age order, William A., Benjamin, and Theodore Taber, Alison (William) Bailey, Anastasia Taber, Mackenzie, Daniel and Rylee Hayes. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, William C. Hayes; and her son, William M. Hayes.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 31, 2016 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Ave., Des Moines. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday, August 1, 2016 also, at the church followed by burial at Nevada City Municipal Cemetery.
