Douglas MacArthur Wilcox, 74, of Fort Dodge, Iowa passed away on September 23, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, following a long series of illnesses.

Doug was born in Sioux City, Iowa on February 12, 1942 to Lawrence and Mary Lucille (Woolworth) Wilcox. He was a 1960 graduate of Central High School in Sioux City. Doug served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1965, some of which was spent on the USS Forrestal aircraft carrier. He then furthered his education at Western Iowa Tech and Iowa Central Community College. Doug served his community for several years as an EMT for Trinity Regional Hospital ambulance service and also for the Webster County Care Facility and the Webster County Home Health Aide Services. He was married to Mardean (Babcock) Wilcox from 1969 to 1992.

Doug’s interests included fishing, hunting, bowling, art, history, nature, and animals, especially horses. He was an avid fan of baseball and football. He was always ready to make someone laugh with his quick wit and jokes. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by daughters, Vallyn Wilcox of Fort Dodge and Karna Nelsen (Alan) of Albert City; grandchildren, Olivia, Lindsey and Dane Nelsen; brothers, Richard (Sharon) of Sioux City and David (Cassandra) of Des Moines; sisters, Karen Howard (John) of Hubbard, NE, Sherry Nash, Becky Wilcox and Julie Nelson all of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews. Doug was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Donald and his wife Judy, sister, Ann Hagestrom, and brothers-in-law, Robert Nash and Barry Nelson.

Services will be held Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. and the service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.
