Monte Tschetter
September 23, 2016
Monte Lynn Tschetter entered this world on February 16, 1950 and departed on September 23, 2016.
Monte was born to Ferdinand and Mary Hofer Tschetter. Following two girls and being the first boy born in the family for many years, he was treated like a prince. Monte was baptized into the Baptist church. He went to school in Doland, South Dakota before the family moved to Spencer, Iowa where he graduated from High School. He attended Iowa Lakes Community College before he and his best friend, Chuck Zahrt, moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Monte loved the Des Moines area and his job as an insurance salesman. He met his wife, Betty Johnston in Des Moines and they were married in 1983. Daughter Vanessa “Vanna” joined the family in 1986. Monte became disabled and retired from work. He enjoyed watching sports on TV. He and Chuck spent almost every Hawkeye football game together cheering on their favorite team. Monte had his favorite teams - Los Angeles Lakers, Green Bay Packers, and New York Yankees – and would plan his day around sporting events.
Monte loved watching Vanna grow up and he was a proud father. When he learned he was going to be a grandfather he was ecstatic. He loved Knox and took great pride in hearing every new word he said. Monte was looking forward to finding out the gender of grandchild #2 soon.
Monte had a quirky sense of humor that was not always easy to understand. He never embraced technology – hated “those computers” and refused to use a cell phone. He was always asking Betty for help with the DVR.
Monte was optimistic – he saw the glass as half full (or ¾ full), treating his medical conditions with natural medicines as well as prescriptions medications. He tried many untraditional treatments to help him feel better. Monte loved his sisters, especially providing a helping hand with Connie when she didn’t feel well or taking Pam candy for her birthday.
Monte was preceded in death by his parents Ferd and Mary, mother and father-in law Elmer and Edna Johnston, brothers-in-law Dean Hoganson and Leonard Hamilton, and nieces Kathy Hatfield and Jodi Gibson. Monte is survived by wife Betty, daughter Vanna Cord (Josh), grandson Knox and grandchild to be, sisters Connie Lovell and Pam Hoganson, nieces Tara Stasi (Joe), Heidi Matthes (Mark), Deana From (Aaron) and great nieces and nephews, longtime friends Chuck and Pam Zahrt, many sisters and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews on Betty’s side of the family that also loved Monte, and many cousins.
The body will be cremated with a family memorial service following.
