Daniel L. (DJ) John

Daniel (DJ) Lowell John, 73, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016 at the VA Medical Center in Des Moines after a long battle with cancer.

Daniel was born February 5, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa to Lowell and Dorothy (Gilmore) John. He was a graduate of East High School. Dan served in the Air Force from 1962 to 1966, during which time he was stationed in Turkey. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a lifelong Methodist and was a member of Baldwin Patterson Post 274 and United Steel Workers. Dan and his wife, Connie were foster parents since 1988, welcoming many children into their home. He served on the Board of Directors for Affinity Credit Union and worked for Firestone from 1966 to 2000. Dan loved spending time with his family and taking family vacations. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing.

Dan is survived by his wife of 54 years, Connie (Starr) John; his children, Eric (Robin) John, Danielle (Cecil) Nichols, and Kimberly (Joe) Muniz; grandchildren, Isaac, Chance, McKayla, Rachael, Kelcey, Dyllon, Jesse, and Tavian; great-grandchildren, Audrey, Mariah, and Declan; brother, Sonny Williams; sisters, Colleen (Larry) Evans, Shirley Young, and Barbara (Bill) Stewart; his four cats; and a host of other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell and Dorothy John and his brother-in-law, Larry Young.

Funeral services will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Family will greet guests for an hour prior to the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to American Cancer Society or to American Lung Association in Dan John’s name.
