Service Details

Sandra Sue Cassady (Moorehead), 72, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully surrounded by an abundance of love and care on Wednesday, June 14, 2017.

Sandy was born December 3, 1944, to parents Donald and Doris Moorehead. The second oldest of 8 crazy brothers and sisters, she grew up and lived on the Southside of Des Moines her entire life. A graduate of Des Moines Abraham Lincoln High School class of ’62, Sandy went on to pursue several jobs in clerical work and modeling, before starting her family in 1964.

Donald L. Cassady I, met Sandy at the age of 14 in Norwalk, IA at a grocery store where he worked. From the moment their eyes met across the produce section, the story was written in the stars. Married in 1964, Sandy gave birth to their first son, Donald II, and four years later gave birth to their second, David. Her fierce devotion to her family was apparent from day one, and eventually came to be her life’s passion. There was not a single party she couldn’t entertain, a cookie or cake she couldn't bake, nor an insurance claim she couldn't file. Her tireless work in the family business which included Sipes, Mercy Hilltop Clinic, Fifield and Cassady Pharmacies as well as her work at home, were vitally integral to the survival of her family.

She danced across the finish line to meet her parents, Doris and Donald Moorehead, her in-laws, Marcella Cassady Harkin, Roy Cassady and Harold Harkin, sisters, Kathy and Donna, and brother, David.

Left behind are countless memories and the family that loved her ever so dearly: her loving husband of 53 years, Donald I, sons, Donald (Lynn) and David (Cori), sisters, Sally (Larry), Debbie, Machelle, brother, Tom, grandchildren, Jade (Greg), Nicholas, Kelcey, Spencer (Mindy), Jacob, Johnny Terry (Jordyn) and Ryan Terry (Ana), and great-grandchildren, Leo and Blakely. We were the lucky ones to have our Moe.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the nurse and care staff of Powell 3 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, for their continuous support through Sandy’s fight. The family would also like to thank her team of doctors, Dr. Nancy Kane, Dr. Greg Hicklin, and Dr. Thomas Buroker.

Her fight may have been quick, but it was steadfast and courageous to the end.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street, Des Moines from 5 to 7 p.m. with vigil service starting at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street, Des Moines on Friday, June 23, 2017.
