Vernon E. Shelton

Des Moines

Vernon E. Shelton passed away on December 1, 2017. Born February 19, 1920 in Hutchinson, Kansas to Skelly and Zella Shelton. Vernon was a lifelong Midwesterner and had resided in Des Moines since WWII.

He served in the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC), the U.S. Calvary, and the Pacific Theatre in World War II.

He worked with the U.S. Post Office for 38 years and also served as a security officer for Younkers for many years, and the Scout Master of troop 58 for 18 years. Vernon enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader, and a private pilot. He was also a long time member of Knox United Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Vernon was admired for his generosity and help for anyone in need. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 67 years, Lorene; and his son, Vernon Jr.

He is survived by his sons, Douglas (Tuscon, AZ) and Blaine (Duluth, MN); his daughter, Jo (Wellborn,FL); seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren of Des Moines, Duluth, Virginia, and Florida.
