Matthew M. Otto

February 25, 2018

Service Details

Matthew M. Otto, 33, was senselessly and brutally killed by a drunk driver as he walked home from the grocery store on Sunday, February 25, 2018. Visitation will be held Thursday, March 8, 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The service will be Friday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m.

Matt was born October 1, 1984, in Des Moines, Iowa to Nicholas and Lori (McLellan) Otto and graduated from Urbandale High School. He was a proud welder and member of Local 67 Iron Workers union of Des Moines and placed fifth in a regional ironworker’s competition in 2014.

Matt was athletic, a good dancer, good with his hands, and had an incredible sense of balance. He was very artistic and enjoyed creating iron sculptures. He recently created a moose sculpture for his mother-in-law and an iron Christmas tree, plus re-designing his mom’s mailbox with art representing the IronWorkers union and the Harley Owners Group in memory of his father. This talent carried over to his handyman skills and his joy of taking things apart to find the repair issue. He was fearless and very adventurous, loved the outdoors, loved to party, and was somewhat of a movie fanatic. He loved listening to music of many types and could carry a tune quite well. Above all, Matt enjoyed spending time with his family.

He will be forever missed by his wife, Amber; children, Jayden, Maximus, Jackson, Lucas, Brandon and Trinity; mother, Lori; brother, Tyler (Sarah); sister, Kaysha (Tim); nephews, Nick and Ben; other loving extended family, his coworkers, and friends. Matt was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas; aunt, Kathy; Uncle Jeff; and his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the family in loving memory of Matt.
