Lois Burt

Lois M. Burt (91) died on Wednesday, February 28th in Urbandale, Iowa. Lois was born on December 3, 1926 to Dan and Golda (Miller) Kirkman in Polk City, Iowa.

Lois married Donald “Don” Burt on November 23, 1950. Don passed away in July of 2001. Lois moved to Urbandale in 2005 where she resided until her death.

Lois began her career with the United States Government in 1944 as a clerk in the Polk City Post Office. She held this position until 1977 at which time she became Post Master, the first woman Post Master of Polk City. She retired in 1985 after serving the Polk City community for 41 years.

During her years in Polk City, Lois was active in the Polk City Library, the Historical Museum, the local OES Chapter and the Ankeny Golf and Country Club.

Lois leaves behind three nieces, Barbara Lowe (Terry) of Crosslake, MN, Janice Johnson (Larry) of Edina, MN, and Joyce Hitz of Denver, CO and their children, Shelly Somrock, Shannon Pietzsch, Heather Eisenmenger, Doug Johnson, Brian Atkinson and Tammi Atkinson. All of the great nieces and nephews had children who were fortunate enough to know Lois, thus completing a 4-generation circle of connectedness. She was also blessed to be a part of Don’s very large family.

Her husband, Don, her parents and one sister, Ruth Hitz preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave. in Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at Union Cemetery in Polk City, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to HCI (Hospice) Care Services.
