Service Details

Florence Mary (Gostomczik) Gieseke
September 1927 – March 2018

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., with funeral services at 11 a.m., on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Burial will follow services at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Florence was born to Joseph and Mary Gostomczik on a farm near Waseca, MN.

She married Louis Gieseke on February 22, 1952. His job required a few moves, but the young family settled in Ankeny in 1959. Her family grew to six boys, which kept her very busy. Florence raised chickens and geese, and grew fresh vegetables and fruit. She spent hours every summer preserving food for the winter. Florence was a wonderful cook, and her fudge, pickles, and red raspberry jam were treasures. She was a terrific bridge player, and enjoyed many travels around the U.S. and abroad with Lou.

When her nest was empty, she worked in the cafeteria at Saylorville Elementary until retirement, and then she volunteered at the Senior Center in Ankeny.

Florence is survived by six sons: Richard (Susan) of Houston; Ron (Deb) of Urbana, OH; Jeff (Sylvia) of Bondurant; Jim (Virginia) of Des Moines; Randy (Louisa) of Wisconsin Dells; and Jerry (Suzi) of Minburn; 22 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Louis.

Memorial contributions in her honor can be made to Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church.
