Nioma Johnston, age 87, passed away on Monday, January 20, 2020, peacefully at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. She was born the daughter of Dewey and Myrtle Henderson on November 29, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa. Nioma attended East High School. After high school, she married Jack Johnston and to this union three children were born, Kenny, Dianna and Steve. Nioma exceled at both cooking and baking and held multiple job positions in that field. Most recently at Des Moines Public Schools as a cook.

Nioma was a member of Salvation Army Church. Her hobbies and interests included, word search puzzles, soaking up the sun, WWE fan and enjoyed shopping she was always able to find a deal. Nioma loved playing the slots at Prairie Meadows and poker with her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving daughter, Dianna (Jim) Flaten; grandchildren, Chanon, Angie, Shane, Carri, Cory, Nick and Kevin; 11 great-grandchildren, Daizsa, Ashlea, NyTierra, Chase, Ariana, Trey, Nakiya, Isabella, Aliyah, Carter and Brecklynn; and great-great-grandson, Isaac.

Nioma was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Kenny and Steve Johnston; and her five siblings.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m., Friday, January 24, 2020 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Private family burial will be held at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Des Moines. A celebration of Nioma’s Life will be held at a later date.
