Barbara Lee Zimmer

Barbara Lee Zimmer, 80, passed away October 10, 2020 at Methodist Hospital. Services will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020 at Maranatha Baptist Church at 11:00 AM with visitation prior from 10 to 11:00 a.m.

Barbara was born November 9, 1939 in Johnston, PA to Margaret (Leffler) and Joseph Custer. She loved music. She played the clarinet in the Junior High band and traveled with her family singing at churches in the Johnstown area. She married her husband, Don Zimmer on March 18, 1961 in Johnstown and the couple moved to Chicago, IL late in 1963. It was here that Barbara attained her LPN nursing license at Silver Cross Hospital. She worked in various nursing positions over the years and retired in 1996. Barbara loved reading and worked as the church librarian where she ran a small bookstore for church members. She loved reading scripture and participating in all kinds of family activities. Her faith was very important to her and she maintained a close, personal relationship with God.

She will be greatly missed by her husband of 60 years, Don Zimmer of West Des Moines; sons, Brian Zimmer and Robert (Cheryl) Zimmer both of Des Moines, and David (Charity) Zimmer of Evansville, IN; her sister, Kathy McClane of Naples, FL; grandchildren, Kelli (Casey) Overberg, Katie (John) Eliason, Brandon Zimmer, Amanda (Michael) Cantrell, Stephanie (Sean) Galloway, Amber Zimmer, Leslie Addis, Valarie Barnes, and Stefanie (Jerry) Purvis; and 20 great-grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Dawn Warnert, Jim Custer and Brenda Gordon; and great-grandson, Isaac Overberg.
