I knew Russ through the VW site TheSamba.com where he was a one of the elder statesmen of the site. He was always helpful, extremely knowledgeable and a true gentleman.
After talking to him online for a number of years I had the privileged to meet him face to face at a VW show in North Carolina a few years ago. We both stayed at a mutual friends home and spend a few days together.
It was an honor to call him my friend and and will cherish the memories for the rest of my life.
My condolences to the family and take peace in knowing that he touch many lives and enriched more people than you can imagine.
Here are some pictures from that VW show.

I only met Russ in person once, at the 2006 Type 3 Invasion, but dealt with him a lot on the Internet. The only way he could be described is as "ein treuer Mensch".
To Russ I'd say: PLEASE enjoy this new phase of the journey as much as you obviously enjoyed the last... and to the family I'd say: Thank you for sharing.
Godspeed and best wishes/ happy thoughts to all.

I knew Russ through the VW community for quite a long time. Although we never met in person, he was a great guy who always made you feel welcome when we chatted on thesamba. He was that way towards everyone. Always very kind and just sweet. Such a good nature about him. Lots of tears have been shed within the VW community over the past days. Russ was a real inspiration and will be missed by so many of us.

I want to thank all the SambaVW members for opening my eyes to all that Russ did for the VW owners around the world. I never saw that side of his generous nature. Since my (our) mother's passing, I havent seen that much of him since I knew he was undergoing a lot of CA treatments and did'nt feel like talking about his course of the disease. Bless you all and keep up your good work on keeping VW's alive even with Russ gone. Thank you all. d.wolfe
