Berniece Ford
"Her children arise and call her blessed." — Proverbs 31:28 (NIV)
Berniece Ford passed away on Father's Day weekend, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, faith, and service that will continue to live on through the many lives she touched.
Berniece was the matriarch of her family, a woman whose presence provided stability, wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love. She was the person family members turned to in moments of celebration, challenge, uncertainty, and joy. Her influence reached far beyond words. She taught through her actions, demonstrating every day what it meant to live with integrity, compassion, and grace.
A self-made woman, Berniece built her life through determination, perseverance, and hard work. She faced obstacles throughout her journey but never allowed adversity to define her. Through faith, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to those she loved, she created opportunities not only for herself but for future generations of her family. Her strength was matched only by her kindness.
Berniece believed in people. She believed in second chances. She forgave easily, loved deeply, and offered encouragement freely. She possessed a rare ability to make others feel valued and important. Whether through a conversation, a helping hand, or a simple act of kindness, she left people better than she found them.
While many knew Berniece as a dedicated educator who spent more than 27 years teaching elementary school students, those closest to her understood that teaching was simply an extension of who she was. Her students were her "babies," and she carried genuine pride in their accomplishments long after they left her classroom. The same patience, care, and belief she gave to her students were the qualities she shared with family, friends, and everyone fortunate enough to know her.
More than any title she held, Berniece will be remembered for the way she loved. Her greatest accomplishments cannot be measured by awards, positions, or achievements, but by the lives she shaped, the family she nurtured, and the countless people who became better because she was part of their lives.
She leaves behind a family who loved her deeply and who will continue to honor her example of faith, perseverance, generosity, forgiveness, and unconditional love.
Berniece is survived by her children, Jaunette Figgous and Charles (Sara) Grigsby; grandson, Xander Grigsby; siblings, Emmanuel Busch and Carolyn Murray, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Carrie (Moses) Busch; grandparents, Menefee J. Moses and Mildred Estes and sister, Dorothy Udoatuck.
A Celebration of Life honoring Berniece Ford will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m., at 755 NE 56th Street, Pleasant Hill, Iowa (this is located behind the Great Escape Bowling).
Though she is no longer with us physically, her love, lessons, and legacy will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew her.

When I think about Berniece, I am reminded of the song "I'm Everything I Am Because You Loved Me." She touched the lives of so many people, and I am so glad she was my Bonus Auntie. Thank you for sharing her with me.

I remember Mrs. Ford from when my son went to Phillips. He was not fortunate enough to have her as his 2nd grade teacher, but they connected anyway. She just was so full of joy. Condolences to her family and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.

Mrs. Ford was my second grade teacher. I learned so much during my time with her and have many fond memories. Some include learning about and celebrating Chinese New Year, singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, and being called her “babies”. I am thankful for the time she was able to teach and influence me, and I’m sorry to hear about her passing. Sending hugs and prayers to her friends and family.❤️
