Service Details

Erick Wayne Mettler, 68, passed away on Friday, December 12, 2025, after a courageous 20-year battle with Huntington’s disease. Born on July 4, 1957, Erick lived a full life marked by hard work, generosity, humor, and a deep love for his family.

In his younger years, Erick enjoyed hunting and fishing and could often be found car racing at local fairgrounds alongside his cousins. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and was a devoted football fan, proudly cheering for his Green Bay Packers. Erick had a lifelong love of sports and treasured time spent watching games with his children. A devoted family man, he rarely missed his daughter’s school activities and took great pride in being present for those moments.

A natural tinkerer, Erick loved working on and fixing just about anything—continuing for as long as his health allowed. He was always willing to lend a hand, helping anyone he could without hesitation. Known for his good spirit, Erick took jokes at his own expense with ease and was quick to share a laugh.

Erick also enjoyed video games, casinos, and card games. He had a fondness for margaritas and, more recently, discovered a new favorite—raspberry margaritas, which brought him particular joy.

Erick dedicated much of his professional life to his work in HVAC, proudly serving in the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union 33. Throughout his career, he worked for various companies, earning respect for his strong work ethic, skill, and reliability. In addition to his civilian career, Erick honorably served in the Army Reserve and National Guard and was a proud veteran of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

While Huntington’s disease took much from Erick physically, it never took his kindness, or the love he had for those around him. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched with his generosity, resilience, and heart.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Deanna; his children, Peter Mettler, Niles (Callah) Mettler, Leslie Mettler (Greg Allen), and Matthew (Elizabeth) Bresley; five grandchildren, with one more expected; one great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Erick was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Walter Mettler; his brother, Mark Mettler; and his brother-in-law, Rodger Schrader.

Visitation will be held from 1:00- 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home. 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50309. Interment will take place at Dunreath Cemetery in Marion County at a later date.
