Jean Batten

Jean Marie Batten, 93, passed away Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Taylor House Hospice. Visitation will be held Thursday, November 19, 2015 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. The memorial service will be Friday, November 20 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Ave. in Des Moines, with interment at 2:00 p.m. at Iowa Veterans Cemetery just north of Van Meter, IA.

Jean was born on March 23, 1922 in Creston, IA to Vae and Edna VanNausdle. After graduation from high school she married Joe Dwight Batten and was a homemaker most of her life. She worked for the V.A., Broadlawns Medical Center, and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Jean was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, sang with the Sweet Adeline’s, and was actively involved in her retirement community, 3801 Grand. Jean had an unconditional love for her family.

She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Wendy (Mark) Havemann; siblings, Leo (Marge) VanNausdle and Darlene (Dutch) Piper; grandchildren, Kyle Pedersen, Steven (Jen) Havemann, Shawne (Chad) Wittrock, and Erin (Cory) Wittrock; 5 great-granddaughters; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Gail; and brother, George.
