Fern M. Varme

Fern M. Varme, 100, passed away September 30, 2011, at Trinity Center at Luther Park.
Fern was born June 26, 1911, in Broadland, South Dakota to Gus and Elnora Peterson. She moved to Des Moines in 1929, and graduated from Iowa Lutheran Hospital’s School of Nursing in 1932. Fern retired from private duty nursing in 1973. She had been a member of Grace Lutheran Church since 1956, and was also a member of the American Scandinavian Foundation, Luther Park Auxiliary, Lutheran Nurses Association, Iowa Lutheran Hospital Auxillary and the Historical Society. Fern enjoyed working as a volunteer for Lutheran Social Services.
Fern is survived by her brother, Richard (Phyllis) Peterson; sons-in-law, James Randolph and Walt Pearce; grandchildren, Lorri (Ted) Eddleman, John (Sue) Malloy, Cindy  (Tom Gurwell) Randolph and Ken (Jennifer) Randolph; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard C. Varme; daughters, Kay Randolph and Diane Pearce; and sister, Greta Peterson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, October 3, 2011, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Iowa Lutheran Charitable Trust Fund.

Fern was part of our family during her many years with my uncle Les Christian. I didn't see this in the paper until it was too late for me to attend. Please accept my sincere condolences and know that she was a very special person.
