Larry Thompson
February 01, 2012
Larry Ray Thompson, 66, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. He was born January 31, 1946, in Webster City, Iowa, to Berwin and Alice (Nemechek) Thompson.
He grew up in Stratford, Iowa, and graduated from Stratford High School. After graduation, Larry enlisted in the United States Air Force and served in Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1969. He worked as a Mechanical Electric Technician at DMACC in Ankeny for 28 years until his medical retirement in 2003. Larry enjoyed fishing, racing, hunting, biscuits and gravy at Ankeny Café, and eating at Red Lobster. He completed everything on his bucket list including, deep sea fishing in the Florida Keys in October of 2011, trips to Colorado and Alaska, seeing his grandson Isaac walk for the first time, and meeting his son, Thom. Most of all Larry loved spending time with his family.
God has always given us laughter with Larry’s sense of humor in the midst of many trials. He endured much suffering for the sake of his family. He called on the Lord for help and trusted Jesus to help him.
Larry is survived by his wife, Barb; children, Thom (Loan) Bui, Wendy (Dave) Walderbach, Wade (May) Thompson and Jenny (Paul) Kelch; four grandchildren, Kim Bui, Grant and Landon Walderbach, and Issac Thompson; his mother, Alice Spitler; and sisters, Barb Scott, Bonnie (David) DeCoursey, Cheryl (Walt) Mills, Linda (Alan) Carlson, and Lora (Steve) Phillips; and many extended family. He was preceded in death by his father, Berwin Thompson; and brother-in-law, Loren.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, February 3, 2012, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 4, 2012, at Hope Lutheran Church, 3857 E. 42nd Street, Des Moines, with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Stratford, Iowa.

Dear Barb and family,
It is never easy saying goodbye to a loved one. I know you will miss all the fun times you shared. Larry and Barb were blessed to have found each other early in life. Together they accomplished wonderful things! Everyone will miss Larry's great smile. I would like to extend my sincere sympathy to Barbara, who was the love of his life, and to their children and THEIR children, each of whom will remember Larry in their own special way.

May God give you assurance that Larry is with the Father; no more pain, no more problems. Larry was a good friend and I enjoyed seeing him at DMACC for so many years. We had many good times at New Testament Bible Fellowship ("the Barn").
He is missed and remembered.
