Elza "Jack" Copeland
February 21, 2012
Elza “Jack” Copeland, 87, passed away February 21, 2012. Services will be held at First Baptist Church, 205 W. Broadway in Fairfield, IA, on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be one hour prior.
Jack was born on July 8, 1924, in Batavia, IA, to Ella and John Copeland. He lived for many years in Ottumwa and Fairfield, moving to Des Moines 4 years ago. Jack married Laurel Greenlee on August 22, 1946. He spent most of his career self-employed. He worked as a milk distributor for 20 years. When he couldn’t find someone to repair the refrigeration units he learned how to repair them himself and opened Jack’s Refrigeration and Air Conditioning which he operated until he retired. After retirement, Jack had a wood crafting business, Copeland Creations, and he and Laurel traveled the state selling his wood creations at craft shows.
Jack will be greatly missed by his loving family; his wife, Laurel; children, Sally (Richard) Hesseltine, Joanne (David) Griffin, Jack “Bud” (Pam) Copeland, Bill (Jill) Copeland, Jane “Tootie” Copeland, Steve (Leora) Copeland, and LaMont “Monte” Copeland; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Judy (Larry) Bandixon and Bonita (Murl) Clay. He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

I once was a member of the family, many years ago. I called him Pops. Pops and Mom have always remained part of my family throughout the years. I remember going out to the building to talk to him while he was loading the milk trucks; I remember riding in the trucks with him; riding in the boat and eating ham sandwiches.
The memory of Pops will always be in my heart. My heart aches for Mom and the rest of the family. I remember you all fondly.

Steve and Family,
I am truly sorry for your loss. In this time of mourning I hope that you can turn to each other and remember the times that you all enjoyed with Jack.
Psalm 23,
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
Sincerely,
Johnathan Pearson

My sympathy and love to all the family! I was fortunate to have been a part of the Copeland family for 14 years, and to have known "Dad C." for so long. What a sweet, funny, loving, interesting person he was! And what an inpsiration with all he did in his lifetime -- how he faced each new endeavor and new direction with complete confidence and a sense of adventure. I feel so lucky to have sat at the kithchen table so many times, listening to the stories of his childhood. He will be greatly missed!!!

Bill, we're sorry to hear about the passing of your father. From his picture it's obvious you inherited his smile. From working with you it's obvious you inherited his work ethic.
Our prayers are with you and your family.
