Derald D. Welter, 83, died on October 4, 2012, of respiratory failure. Born on July 19, 1929, he was the first child of Theodore John and Grace Morinville Welter. He was a member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church.

Derald, a lifelong resident of Des Moines, served in Korea. Upon his return, he married Evelyn Runciman on October 18, 1952. As a salesman he worked for Cataldo Furniture, Younkers, Coles, and Wards. He was also an umpire in the Des Moines area for 29 years until the age of 72.

After retiring in 1991, he and Evelyn enjoyed traveling, especially overseas. They were active members of the Southside Senior Center. He helped with many gambling trips to Hinckley, MN, and Tama. After Evelyn died, he was very lonely until he met Dorothy Halliburton, the second love of his life.

Survivors include Dorothy Halliburton; children, Linda (Paul) Matheis, Diane Welter, Lori (Kevin) Shea, Paul Welter, Marsha (Kelly) Brown, Maureen (Jeff) Deppe, Natalie Welter, and Julie Welter; grandchildren, Angela (John) and Greg Matheis, Adam, Katie, and Carrie Shea, Justine, Jenny, Jessica (Ryan), Joanna Welter, Sarah, Emily, and Byron Brown, Ali and Tom Deppe, and David, Joseph, and Dan Welter; seven great-grandchildren; and siblings, Byron (Georgine) Welter, Marty (Paul) Setterlund, and Dutch (Mary) Welter. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn; sister, Lois; brother, Bob; daughter-in-law, Jody; and a great-grandson.

A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Monday, October 8, 2012, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. A rosary service at 6 p.m., followed by visitation until 8 p.m., will be held on Sunday, October 7, at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Southside Senior Center or UIHC Tranel Lab-Alzheimer’s Research.
