Mary Edith Slantz, 78, passed away on Saturday October 20, 2012. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at 3:30 p.m. at the Deerfield Retirement Community, 13731 Hickman Road in Urbandale, IA. Burial will be in Barrington, IL.
Mary was born on October 2, 1934, in Barrington, IL, to Donald and Carol (Gillespie) Titterton. She graduated from Carlton University with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and English, and received her master’s in Physical Therapy at the University of Michigan. Mary lived most of her life in Michigan, working as a physical therapist and teaching at the University of Michigan. Mary moved to Des Moines in 2007, and lived at Deerfield.
She enjoyed the outdoors and nature. She was an avid animal fan and especially loved dogs.
Mary gave of her time, talents, and resources generously. She was a talented musician and played the piano, organ, and hand bells for years at church. At Deerfield, she was an active volunteer for many groups, and started the Hand Chimes Choir.
She will be greatly missed by her niece, Cindy (Alan) Wells of Urbandale, IA; nephew, Greg (Ponda) Titterton of Byron, IL; great-nieces and nephews, Meredith (Joe) Barnes, Grant Titterton, Anna Wells, and Jason Wells; great-great-niece, McKenna Barnes; and her many friends at the Deerfield Retirement Community. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Alanson Titterton; and her sister-in-law, Ruth Titterton.
