Melvin Lewis Hawkins, Jr., 75, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Fleur Heights Care Center.
Melvin was born May 29, 1937, in La Belle, Missouri, to Melvin Lewis Hawkins, Sr. I, and Georgia Ellen Clay. He was a farmer all of his young life and graduated from Lincoln High School in La Belle, Missouri. Melvin learned to be a jack of all trades and owned Mr. Brown’s Trash. He enjoyed drag racing, spending time with his friends and his sister, “Aunt Abbey.”
He leaves to mourn his son, Melvin Hawkins, Jr. III, of Davenport; daughters, Mary Hawkins Clark, Sr., Evelyn Hawkins, Shirley Hawkins, and Barbara Hawkins Byrum, of Des Moines, Victoria Hawkins Jones and Shirley Hawkins Burrage, of Davenport, Iowa; sisters, Abba Louetta Range of Zion, Illinois, Leona Belle Enyard of Vinton, Texas, and Georgia Irene Hawkins of LaGrange, Missouri; 50 grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and beloved friends.
Also surviving Melvin is his special niece, Schela Enyard of Macon, Missouri.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Marie Hawkins; mother, Georgia Ellen Clay; father, Melvin Lewis Hawkins, Sr. I; and his sister, Eleanora Tolson.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. prior to the service Monday, at the funeral home.
