Gordon Cook
June 18, 2014
Gordon W. Cook, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Unity Point Methodist. He will be deeply missed by family and many friends.
Gordon was born April 1, 1928 in Freeport, Illinois to Fred and Charlotte Cook. He lived most of his life in Des Moines, where he was a 1946 graduate of East High School. He served in the United States Navy during WWII with honor and dignity. He started the next phase of his life working for Pepsi Cola, as a sales manager until 1985, when he retired. Gordon was 45 years old when he gave his life to Christ as a born again Christian, from that day forward he followed his Lord and Savior faithfully. Gordon had been a member of Airport Baptist Church where he was a greeter, and for over seventeen years he and Mildred served in the church nursery. Gordon was currently a member of Willow Creek Baptist Church, where he continued to greet and welcome all those entering the church.
Gordon had a wonderful and witty sense of humor, always bringing a smile to people’s faces. Gordon lived a life of integrity, was a good listener and always had a positive attitude. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He ended his phone conversations with his family with “love you” instead of “good-bye”. His grandchildren were his greatest treasures. Together he and his grandchildren shared a love of traveling and visiting amusement parks – he never met a rollercoaster he didn’t like! He was definitely young at heart. He was a faithful, loyal, and considerate friend who always helped those in need.
Gordon is survived by his children, Lanny (Deb) Cook-Caligiuri, Sherry (Paul) Adair, Jane (Russ) Brown, Paula Boyum and Mike Cook; grandchildren, Tracy, Paul, Melissa, Natalie, Jennifer, Emily, Anne, Lori and Chris; and 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Phyllis Erickson and George (Mary Ann) Cook; and nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Mildred.
The family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2014 at Willow Creek Baptist Church, 720 Army Post Road in West Des Moines, Iowa followed by a 12:30 p.m. burial at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter.
Memorials may be given to Shepherds Ministries, 1805 15th Avenue, Union Grove, WI 53182 in remembrance of Gordon.
Gordon’s family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to his I.C.U. Nurse, Caleb for all the kindness and compassion he showed Gordon in his final hours.

Condolences to Gordon's family as you deal with his passing. For many years he greeted us at the door so cheerfully each Sunday. He taught many about dedication and humility, and I am certain he will be among the first to greet us in Paradise!
