Frank Byrne

Frank Byrne of West Des Moines, Iowa passed away on September 24, 2016 of cancer at the Kavanagh House. He was born in London, England on March 13, 1940 to Frank and Bridget Byrne. Frank and his family immigrated to Chicago in 1956 where he attended Austin High School. He received an Associate Degree at Wright College and then went to work for BP Amoco in 1960 until his retirement in 1996. While employed with BP Amoco, he was drafted by the US Army in 1963 where he served in Korea until 1965. He then served in the reserves until 1969. Frank loved his Chicago Cubs and Bears as well as being an avid fan of the Arsenal (soccer team in England). A week didn't go by when he wasn't on the golf course or sitting at the Cotton Tail playing cards with the boys.
Frank leaves his loving wife of 10 years, Joyce; sons, David (Yolanda) and Tony of Dallas Texas; step-children, Tim (Molly) Bassett of West Des Moines and Tara (Chris) Amundson of Waukee; sister, Maureen (Hugo) Fruehauf of California; and brother, Patrick (Donna) of Illinois; niece, Susan (Ron) Bruns; nephew, Steven (Karla) Fruehauf; six grandchildren; as well as his faithful companions for so many years, Ollie (deceased August) and Bernie. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, John; and his grandson, Cristian.
Frank touched so many lives over the years, and as we heard it said so many times.....thanks Frank for being part of our family.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines and the Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 29 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1627 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines. Burial will be at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.

While I may have lost touch with Frank over the last several years, my memories of the time working and socializing with Frank remain vivid. He was a "one of kind" man, at once both gruff and tender. I regret very much being unable to renew our acquaintance prior to his passing. My sympathies to Joyce and all of Frank's family and friends who were close to him, and may he rest in peace.
