Alfred "Fred" Chiodo

October 19, 1947 — June 30, 2026

Service Details

The force of nature known as Alfred “Fred” Chiodo Jr, born October 19th, 1947, passed away peacefully at home, on his own terms, June 30th 2026.

It’s difficult to express all that Fred was in a few paragraphs. His smile, piercing blue eyes and charisma galore could light up any room, including a dreary hospital room.

Fred’s many passions included fine art, antiques, music, food, dancing, reading, traveling, animals (most notably his beloved cockatoo, Casey, and loyal kitty, Lenore) bonsai trees, gardening, and being the life of the party. He loved watching a good British mystery series almost as much as he loved watching football.

No matter how many times his daughter explained the odds to him, Fred never gave up his dream of winning the lottery and moving to Florida. Always the dreamer and schemer.

He enjoyed helping people, and during his time as a correction officer at Fort Des Moines, he took pride in treating everyone with dignity and respect.

For those of us that knew him best, Fred forever altered our definition of love. He showed us that love is both strength and vulnerability. Love is comforting and maddening. Love is the source of our greatest joy and deepest grief.

Fred’s greatest love of all was his family. He was a proud son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Ever the main character, Fred leaves behind a presence that will never be forgotten.

Fred is survived by his sisters, Angela (Gary) Wilson and Kathy Kennedy; daughter, Talia (Ryan) Chaffee; sons, Jeff (Michelle) Chiodo, Jim (Stephanie) Chiodo and Jake Chiodo; grandchildren, Luna, Stella, Justice, Tessa, Riley, Brock, Domonic and Zach; two great grandchildren and another on the way; nephews, Aron (Lisa) Wilson and Alec (Courtney) Kennedy; and a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Sr. and Anna Chiodo and his nephew, Garrett Wilson.

A Celebration of Life will be held later this fall.
