Service Details

Barbara Jean Rhodes, age 80, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Barbara was born August 28, 1945 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Art and Millie Parker. She was raised alongside her sisters Beverly and Bonnie. After graduating from Ottumwa High School, she enrolled in AIB secretarial school. She worked as a legal secretary for the State of Iowa, and later worked at Banker's Life, Principal, and Iowa Telecom. She worked so she could play.

Barbara married the life of her life, Keith Rhodes, on June 6, 1965. Together, they raised their two sons, Michael and Mark.

Barbara was a vibrant soul who embraced life with creativity, adventure, and an abundance of joy. She loved spending her time outdoors camping, boating, and fishing, but she was equally at home crafting and sewing beautiful projects. Barbara radiated energy, a trait perfectly mirrored in her wardrobe, which frequently featured bright colors, sparkles, and her beloved flamingos. Always uplifting, she was consistently there for others with a helping hand, a warm smile, a comforting hug, or a shared laugh.

Her spirit of service and leadership shone brightly through her decades of dedication to the Order of the Eastern Star and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, where she proudly held numerous leadership offices at both the local and state levels. Above all, her greatest happiness came from being surrounded by family and friends—whether gathered tightly around the kitchen table or sitting by a crackling campfire, telling stories, laughing, and making unforgettable memories together. Simply put, if you knew Barb, you loved her because she loved you.

Barbara will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 61 years, Keith Rhodes; children, Michael (Robin) Rhodes and Mark (Maggie) Rhodes; grandchildren, Jordan Rhodes, Jacob Rhodes, Katrina Rhodes, Lucais Rhodes, and Spencer Rhodes; brother in law, Dick (Judy) Agee; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Millie Parker; sisters, Beverly Agee and Bonnie Parker.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026 at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway, West Des Moines with visitation prior from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.
