Barbara Ann Larson

Barbara (Bowen) Larson, of Clive, died peacefully at home on January 31, 2026 surrounded by family. Barb was born on September 11, 1945, to Melvin and Kathryn Bowen in Minneapolis, MN. She moved to Des Moines as an infant and attended Des Moines Schools, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1963. She attended the University of Iowa and AIB Business School. After graduation, she met her husband Gary of 43 years.
Barb worked for the City of Urbandale for 37 years. She began her career working in the Planning and Zoning Department and then spent most of her years at the Urbandale Police Department as the Executive Secretary for several Police Chiefs.
Barb was preceded in death by her mother, Kathryn (2017); father, Melvin (2002); and a niece. Barb is survived by her husband, Gary; her brother, Ted Bowen (Carmen); sister, Melinda Collins (Jerry); several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Barbie’s interests were many, but family always came first. She cherished her many close friendships and her beloved dog, Ike. She loved to travel, camp, shop, collect, and decorate for every season and holiday. Barb was a 50-year member of Plymouth Congregational Church and a member of P.E.O. Chapter JK.

A memorial gathering for Barbie will be held Monday, February, 9, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, IA Family will greet friends prior to and following the service.
