Betty H. Smith

Betty Harlene Smith, 88, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Betty was born January 4, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa to Harlan and Veda Gallagher. She was a resident of the Des Moines area her entire life. She was a proud graduate of North High School. Betty worked as a Supervisor for an insurance agency during her working years. Her greatest joy was her family. She loved being surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Betty enjoyed watching football and basketball, and cheered equally for the Hawkeyes and Cyclones. She loved traveling and took many trips to Hawaii. Betty also liked riding her Gold Wing trike.

She is survived by her daughter, Julie Williams; daughter-in-law, Norien Lyons; brother, Michael Gallagher; grandchildren, Steffani Lyons, Christopher Lyons, Tiffani Morrill (Jerry), Jayme Williams (Jamee), and Molly Williams (Miles); 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; as well as many other extended family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her husbands, Jerry Lyons and Richard Smith; her son, Jerry Lyons, Jr.; and her son-in-law, LeRoy Williams.

There will be a memorial service at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 16, 2025, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Family will greet guests one hour prior to the service.
