Daryl L. Barnard

Daryl Lynn Barnard, age 78, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 11th, 2025, at the VA Hospital in Des Moines.
Daryl was born June 17th, 1947, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, to Durant and Elizabeth (VanderBeek) Barnard. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Oskaloosa High School, class of 1965. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, receiving a Purple Heart for his bravery.
When he returned from his service, he married Marilyn Spurgeon Cline in 1974. They lived in Waterloo before settling in Dexter. From this union came his first daughter, Jessica Barnard Spencer. They later divorced.
His career spanned several industries, including broadcast radio at KBOE in Oskaloosa, under the stage name of Brian Roberts. He continued his radio career at KXEL in Waterloo. He worked at Pork Producers of Iowa and was named the Farm Bureau Voice of Agriculture. Other notable career endeavors included stints in retail, diamontology, many management roles, and ministry as the pastor of Christ United Methodist Church in Des Moines. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge 370 and the Dexter American Legion.
His second marriage was to Tamela Carruth Barnard in 1990, with whom he shared his second daughter, Dakota Barnard. They lived in Des Moines, Iowa, for the remainder of his years.
Music was his passion following his background in DJing. He spent many evenings singing karaoke with his friends and listening to old country music on his Amazon Echo Dot. He enjoyed spending quality time with his many friends and his family.
He is survived by his wife, Tamela Barnard; daughters Jessica Spencer (Tom) and Dakota Barnard (Justin); step-children Jill Harris (Chris), Amy Cline; grandchildren Gracelyn and Marlee Spencer; and many good friends.
Daryl was preceded in death by his parents, Durant and Elizabeth Barnard; infant sister Connie June; step-son Scott Cline; and several aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be held from 5-7pm on Sunday, November 16th, at Hamilton's Funeral Home at 605 Lyon Street in Des Moines.
Graveside service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, November 18th, at Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Although I never met Daryl I had the privilege of working with his daughter Dakota. And knowing her and her character speaks volumes about the kind of father and man he was.
My thoughts and prayers remain with the family.
