Danny "Moe" Nelson Middleton
June 11, 1952 — October 25, 2025
Danny “Moe” Nelson Middleton, 73, of Altoona, Iowa, passed away surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Des Moines to Earl and Thelma Middleton, Danny moved to Altoona in 1972. He proudly served for over 31 years in law enforcement, beginning with the Mitchellville Police Department before joining the Altoona Police Department in 1976. He later served as Chief of Police in Bondurant, then returned to Altoona until his retirement in 2007.
In addition to his police service, Danny volunteered as a firefighter for the City of Altoona, reflecting his lifelong commitment to protecting and serving others. He completed advanced training through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy and the FBI, specializing in leadership, fingerprint analysis, and accident investigation. Colleagues and his community alike respected Danny for his fairness, calm leadership, and kindness.
Danny was a proud member of King David Lodge, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, where he celebrated his Irish heritage. He was raised in Auburn Union Park Lodge on November 7, 1973, served as Master of King David Lodge in 1998, and as Chaplain from 2001 through 2025. In 2016, he received the T.S. Parvin Award, Iowa’s highest Masonic honor, for his service and leadership.
He earned his 32° Master of the Royal Secret in the Scottish Rite at the Des Moines Consistory and remained active in many degrees, most recently the 20th. A devoted member of the Friends of the Des Moines Consistory, Danny also served for many years on the Sound Committee, always lending a helping hand. His work in King David Lodge reflected his life values — loyalty, brotherhood, and service.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Thelma Middleton; brothers Patrick and Denny Middleton; and his son, Officer Daniel N. Middleton.
He is survived by his children, Shawntel Cooney (Todd), Kristina Sutherland (Adam), and Stephani Middleton; his brother Michael Middleton (Sharon); seven grandchildren; extended family; and many dear friends who were like family. He also cherished a lasting friendship with his former wife, Karen Middleton.
Danny’s life was a true reflection of service, loyalty, and love. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and the community he served.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, November 7, 2025, at Lutheran Church of the Cross, 1701 8th Street SW, Altoona, Iowa. Following the service, a time of fellowship and remembrance will take place at the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, 1100 Shriners Parkway, Altoona, Iowa.

Then, There Were Two
In the fall of 1957, among the couple of handsful of elementary school students braving the cruel and at times insurmountable challenges of Carbondale Road, there was among them four five year olds, Denny, Danny, Carol and Chris. they were on their way to kindergarten class at Carbondale Elementary School.
Over the next few years while other classmates would come and go these four remained steadfast in their marches and studies, all the whilst braving Red Rover, Battle ball and out....door......plumbing. All of this along with the occasional whacks of a bespectacled and seemingly always mad at the world Birdie Lewis.
In the fall of 1962 it seems, a large yellow object rolled into our schoolyard, a school bus it was called. Staring wide-eyed and apparently in shock was the Shady View Blvd High Muckity Muck Tribe gazing upon the Carbondalian Tribe in their full tattered regalia. You could feel the horror of the High Muckity Muck Tribe when their eyes beheld the two small white outbuildings at the furthermost back side of the playground. Yes, outhouses!
Over these early formative years an unbreakable bond was formed that would last a lifetime. Neither time nor distance would ever break this bond formed in such youthful times.
Backyard baseball, adventures in the timbered Powder House Grounds, swimming in Somer's Pond, rolling down Carico's Hill in tractor tires all with the energy and laughter of youth aw, life couldn't get better.
Inevitably the schoolyears would come to end, done, over. Time to move on start work, raise families, watch our families grow, all of life's busy things. But, no matter how busy we became in life, how far we may have moved from one another or how infrequently we saw each other, one of those bonds always stayed. My friend Danny and me!
Sometimes years would pass but, when "Moe" and I got together again over a beer, lunch or whatever, it was as if time had stood still. The laughs, the memories, all of the fun times always came rushing back. He was the best of everything anyone could want in a friendship, truth, honesty and unflinching support. Danny maintained all of that in both his career and life.
His twin Denny left us way too early in life for higher levels of consciousness and Pat as well but, I was fortunate to again see my friend/brother Danny a few weeks ago before he passed away from cancer. Along with his big brother "Moe I" we were able to share some laughs and memories.
Many years and names of Carbondale past came back to us we enjoyed some ever so short hours together.
It was my honor and pleasure to have grown up, worked and shared part of my life with you Danny "Moe" Nelson Middleton 6/11/1952 to 10/25/2025.
Danny, I will see you again on the other side. Love You Brother!

I knew Danny through our ties in law enforcement and King David Lodge. Danny always carried himself as a professional with his public interactions. In private, you could count on him for an opinion and often a funny one at that. Danny was a good man!

I didn't know Danny-but I knew his brother Denny-In another lifetime when we were 'kids'! Denny and I dated for abit-when he was in the service-he was always kind to me and treated me with respect! We exchanged a few letters and I kinda remember picking him up off of SE 64th-not sure I was driving! I could see the family resemblence in the obituary picture and I am truly sorry for your loss! Your family has lost a great man!!

Danny and I went to school together. He was a happy, sweet, kindhearted guy. I am so sorry that he has passed but glad he will no longer have to deal with cancer and the pain that comes with it. Rest with the angels Danny 🙏🏻❤️🩹
