Darrell L. Stanley

Darrell Laerence Stanley, 51, passed away on February 28, 2026, at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.

Darrell was born on May 26, 1974, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Sandra Stanley. He attended school at Ruby Van Meter and graduated in May of 1995. Darrell moved into Balance Autism (AKA The Homestead) in December of 1994. He participated in vocational services working on the farm. Darrell maintained the grounds, gardens and greenhouse by being our number one weeder. Darrell also mowed the lawn and rototilled the fields for planting. Darrell was an avid puzzler. He was so talented at putting together puzzles he could even take 2 to 3 puzzles apart, mix them together and put them all back together. Darrell was extremely close to his mother Sandra – and enjoyed spending time with her. Darrell enjoyed listening to music, especially gospel music. This past spring – Darrell went fishing and caught his first fish. His pride was evident! Another favorite hobby was to go to the Neil Smith Park and scope out Buffalo. Over the thirty years he lived at Balance Autism – Darrell developed many lifelong friendships with many caring individuals and his housemates. Darrell was always kind and patient with his peers and presented as a “big brother”. Darrell was fondly nicknamed “Bubba” and loved to bring a smile to everyone he interacted around.

Darrell is survived by his mother, Sandra.

Family will be greeting friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home; 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. Funeral service will immediately follow the visitation at 12:00 p.m. Darrell will be laid to rest of Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
