I'm still in shock. Dirk was just like a brother, we grew up together living next door to each other. Our family were intertwined, all of us. Our parents were great pals and spent a great deal of time together when they weren't working. Always entertaining, BBQs, meals out, many, many parent's night out. Card games and cocktails were a weekly thing. Having kids the same age next door was a built-in friendship. We spent a lot of time together, lots of fun times and well, we got into trouble a few times too. I wouldn't change a thing. We use to call Dirk 'Dirkus' - can't remember how that came about but is was always Dirkus. I'll never forget his laugh, there was a great joy in that. He was a very kind soul, always loved animals. Dirk had a gentle, non-threatening personality that made people want to be around him. As most childhood friendships go - as school ended, we all searched for our paths we went our own ways. However, never to far not to keep in touch. Dirk fell in love with his best friend Deb. We all knew that when they met. Their souls matched each other and gifted the world with two children. Christmas cards came and went so I always got the scoop from Dorothy (his Mom). Thank goodness for facebook, it has put us all back in touch with our extended families.
To all of Dirk's family and his many, many friends - keep all of your memories close to your heart. Remembering Dirk is the best Gift he could have given us.
Mr. Dirk Rector, thank you for being my friend. I'll miss you.
