Donald Joseph Doudna
March 23, 1949 — November 21, 2025
Donald J. Doudna, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2026, at the age of 76.
Born in Des Moines, Iowa, Don graduated from North High School, where he met the love of his life, Janice. The two shared a devoted marriage of fifty-five years, marked by love, partnership, and faith. Don went on to graduate from Drake University and later earned his Masters of Healthcare Administration and then Ph.D. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
He began his career in academia, serving as a professor of insurance at Central Michigan University and Drake University, where he inspired students with his knowledge and mentorship. Don later moved into the insurance and economic development fields, contributing his expertise to organizations including Equitable Life and Toyota. He also enjoyed serving as the Director of Insurance Development for the State of Iowa. In the latter part of his professional life, he found his calling in succession planning, where he helped many families successfully transition their businesses.
Don’s life was also defined by his strong commitment to community building and generosity. He was instrumental in supporting numerous individuals and nonprofit organizations throughout his lifetime. In retirement, he served with distinction as a board member of the Community Foundation of Volusia and Flagler, leaving a lasting impact on the community he and Janice called home during the winter months.
His dedication to education was lifelong. He tirelessly worked in the establishment and growth of Joshua Christian Academy in Des Moines, Iowa, and more recently helped develop a reading initiative in Florida called Volusia Reads, which continues to inspire young learners.
Beyond his professional and community service, Don enjoyed traveling the world with Janice, as well as playing tennis, biking, and golf. His curiosity, generosity, and joyful spirit enriched the lives of everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; his children, Katherine Nedved (James) of Winter Springs, FL, Amanda DuBose of Phoenix, Benjamin Doudna of Moyock, NC, and Andrew Doudna of San Francisco; and his grandchildren, Joseph (Mackenzie) Nedved, Abigail Nedved, Peter Nedved, Joel Nedved, Daniel DuBose, David DuBose (Natalie), Vincent DuBose, Bethany DuBose, Nora Doudna, and Azariah Doudna; and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Dale Doudna (Marlys).
Don’s legacy is one of faith, generosity, and service. A devoted follower of Jesus Christ, he lived out the gospel through his work, his community service, and his family life. Don believed in the hope of eternal life promised in Scripture and trusted in the saving grace of Christ. Though he will be deeply missed, his family rejoices in knowing that he is now in the presence of his Savior.
A celebration of Don’s life will be held at The Bridge, 10025 NW 62nd Ave. in Johnston, IA on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. The service will be livestreamed and the link will follow shortly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Joshua Christian Academy in Des Moines, Iowa, or to the Community Foundation of Volusia and Flagler, Daytona Beach, Florida.
