Lucille Vannoy
August 03, 1933 — October 14, 2025
Lucille Donna Vannoy, 92, was born on August 3, 1933, in rural Mahaska County, Iowa to Raymond and Luella (Sumner) Scharff. She grew up on a large farm, where her lifelong passion for country living began.
Lucille married Dean Vannoy in 1950 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. They later moved to Altoona, where they raised their seven children before eventually settling in Bondurant. There, Lucille began her beloved business, Lucille’s Garden Center, which she owned and operated for 56 years with the help of family and her dear volunteers, Chet and Rosemary, Jan, Barb and Dixie. The garden center was her pride and joy. She loved her work; her flowers, and especially her customers. Lucille had a gift for making everyone’s day a little brighter and she truly enjoyed visiting with anyone who crossed her path.
Lucille and Dean shared 69 years of marriage before his passing. She was known for her kindness, optimism, and ability to see the good in everyone. No matter what challenges came her way, Lucille faced them with a smile and her signature saying, “Whatever, no biggie!”
In addition to running her garden center, Lucille worked for Dr. Phelan’s office, she drove a school bus for Southeast Polk, and later retired from Warren Frozen Foods.
Family was everything to Lucille. She was endlessly grateful for her friends and loved ones who helped and supported her through the years. Sundays were often spent surrounded by family at Grandma’s house. She was happiest in her kitchen, preparing a big dinner for anyone who walked through door – especially her famous fried chicken and ham.
Left to remember her are her daughters, Sherrill (Don) Raitt and Donna (Roland) Brees; sons, Dennis Vannoy, Les (Brenda) Vannoy and Mark Vannoy; son-in-law, Gary Garner; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Arteman; brothers, Lee (Linda) Scharff and Rex (Connie) Scharff; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Vannoy; son, Rodney Vannoy; daughter, Carole Renaud; parents, Raymond and Luella Scharff; sister, Letha Lee; and her granddaughter, Mary Roftus.
A Celebration of Lucille’s life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) in loving memory of Lucille.

I just wanted to clarify my maiden name to the family. Sherrill especially as you and Rodney were the two I spoke to when at the garden center.
I am so sorry for your loss.
I will miss getting to see you in the spring at the garden center as I did this spring.
All the best and love to you all. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

I just found this out today, through my sister, Connie seeing the obituary.
Sorry to hear about her passing. We were cousins and when we had seen an article in the DM newspaper about her very successful flower and garden center we were excited to go check it out. We would go shopping there almost every year after to buy flowers and garden veggie plants. She and the family were always so helpful answering any questions you had about gardening. She was an amazing hard working woman as many have said and always kind and caring. She
was well known and had the best prices around for her flowers and veggies. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
My condolences to all of the family. I was at the garden center this spring, but didn’t see any of the family members at the time. I wondered at that time if she was ill. My heart goes
out to all family and friends.
Rest in peace, Lucille. ❤️🙏🏻❤️

I worked at Warren's Frozen Foods with Lucille. She was fun to work with and was all business while working. She was a hard worker. She ofter would lift heavy bags of flour for mixing like it was nothing. If I remember correctly, she wore cowboy boots alot. Good memories! My condolences to her family

I grew up across the “field” from this family. They had 7 kids, we had 8.
The Vannoys and the Noes. (The names rhyme)
We had more girls than boys, they had the opposite.
To me she was a country western lady, hard worker and no nonsense person, especially when it came to kids. She was just as strict with the Noe kids as she was with her own.
My mother and her were good friends, though with busy lives, they had no time to spend with each other. Me; a Tom-boy, I was always trying to one-up Rodney (my age) and that did not exclude fighting! As an adult I was only at her nursery a couple times (living out of state) but I thought it was a very successful business. My condolences to the family. Praying for all who loved her.
