SSG Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar
October 17, 2000 — December 13, 2025
SSG Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar was born on October 17, 2000, in DeKalb, Illinois. Shortly before his first birthday, his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Edgar grew up surrounded by the unconditional love of his parents and siblings.
He was the oldest brother of Samuel Torres-Tovar and Daniel Torres-Tovar, and the beloved brother of Krystal Torres-Tovar. To his brothers, Edgar was always a role model; to his sister, he was her protector and best friend. He was raised humbly, in a home where love and family unity were more than enough. He never asked for material things, because his family’s love fulfilled him completely.
Edgar completed his education from kindergarten through high school, graduating from Dowling Catholic High School. After graduation, he was certain of his purpose in life: to serve his country. He enlisted in the United States Army, where he completed basic training and infantry school.
His first deployment was to Kosovo, where he shared unforgettable experiences with close friends Freddy Sarceno, David Hernández, and Luis Corona. During that time, they remained united, forming bonds that would last a lifetime.
After returning from his first deployment, Edgar stayed for a time to help his father with the family gutter business. He enjoyed watching movies with his dad, talking with his mom, and spending time with his siblings, joking and laughing together. He loved speaking about his work in the Army and how meaningful it was to him. He enjoyed board games with his family and cousins, playing with his dog Daisy, and video games with his brothers. He deeply loved spending time with his sister, whom he considered his queen, and adored his nephews, Castiel and Christopher. While Christopher was still in his mother’s womb, Edgar dreamed of returning home to meet him and watch both nephews grow.
In 2022, Edgar proudly signed his second contract for deployment to Kuwait. In 2023, he met his girlfriend, Yareli, with whom he shared his stories and dreams of marriage and starting a family.
In 2025, Edgar said goodbye to his family with hope and excitement to return soon. Even before leaving, he spoke about how much he already missed them. He spent his final days making as many memories with his family as possible.
While deployed in the Middle East, Edgar remained in constant communication with his parents, siblings, his two beloved nephews, and his girlfriend through video calls. Tragically, on December 13, 2025, his family received the devastating news of his passing.
Edgar was an exemplary person, a source of pride for his parents and a role model for his siblings. He was a family man, loved by all who knew him. He had dreams, goals, and a smile that lit up any room. He loved his work, and he left this world doing what he was passionate about.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving parents, Hugo Torres and Isabel Tovar; brothers, Samuel Torres and Daniel Torres; sister, Krystal Torres and her children, Castiel and Christopher; paternal grandparents, Jose Torres and Rita Garcia; girlfriend, Yareli Duran; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Santiago Tovar and Dolores Herrera.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 28, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy at 3:00 p.m. and the Rosary prayed at 5:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street in Des Moines.

Edgar was my older cousin who I Looked up too , and cherished .I don't want to believe this; I want to wake up and say 'thank goodness it was a dream, but it's not a dream. A few months ago, we were dancing together at my Quinceañera, and you were teaching me how to dance. We would sit on my porch, just talking about how it used to be, and we laughed. I remember the crazy songs you played at my Quinceañera; you were the older brother I never had. I recall begging you to stay longer. I wish I could go back to March and spend more time with him. He was the first person in our family to serve our country as a first-generation soldier. I can't believe you're gone. You were so young and had so much to live for; you are a hero to so many and a hero to me. He was an amazing cousin to me and my family. Words can't explain how I feel right now, losing you. You will always be my hero and a hero to our entire family. Thank you for sacrificing your life for our country. You sacrificed your own life for our family. I wish this was a dream; I miss you so much. Thank you for your service, cousin. We love you and miss you all.
And I will look at the sky every sunrise and sunset, missing you. Till we meet again, cousin.

I didn’t know Sgt. Torres-Toval, but I wanted to express our condolences. Our grandson, Sgt. William “Nate” Howard, was killed at the same time as Sgt. Torres-Toval and was transported back to the US with him. We feel your pain and pray that God is holding and comforting you.

To the Torres-Tovar Family,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. My heartfelt condolences go out to your entire family during this incredibly difficult time.
Although I did not know Edgar personally, I had the honor of working closely with two people who loved him deeply his best friend and his girlfriend. Through them, it was clear how much Edgar meant to those around him and how deeply he was cared for. The love, respect, and memories they shared speak volumes about the kind of person he was.
Please know that Edgar’s life made an impact, and he will not be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you grieve and as you remember his life. I hope you are surrounded by strength, comfort, and support during this time.

To the Torres-Tovar family,
My heart is broken. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Edgar was an incredible young man, and it was truly an honor to know him and work with him. From the start, he stood out for his humility, kindness, and the pride he took in his family and his service in the Iowa Army National Guard.
As his recruiter, I can say without hesitation that Edgar was the kind of Soldier leaders hope for and teammates rely on. But more than that, he was simply a good man. His loss is felt deeply, not just by those who loved him at home, but by the many people he served alongside and impacted through his example.
Thank you for raising such an exceptional son and brother. Please know that Edgar’s service, his character, and his memory will always be honored. He will never be forgotten.

Our sons served together in both Kosovo and also this current deployment. I cannot begin to express the deep sorrow I feel about the passing of your son, and the tremendous loss you are now bearing. Please know that your family is in our prayers. Your sweet son will be forever held tightly in the hearts of those who knew him, as well as those he never met for whom he made the ultimate sacrifice. While I understand our children go into service with their eyes wide open, knowing the risks, as do we, it can never prepare us for the reality of that cost. Please know that if there is any way I can add comfort to your family I am here.
