Ethel Johnson

Ethel Johnson passed away November 6, 2025 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She was 86 years of age.

Ethel was born November 23, 1938 in Des Moines, Iowa to Virgil and Magdalene Towne. She attended Roosevelt High School and during that time, she met her future husband, Lawrence Johnson.

Lawrence and Ethel were married on January 26, 1957. They became parents of three sons, Larry, Randy, and Bob. Over the years Ethel held several part time jobs while raising her children and keeping up with their activities. She also enjoyed the family vacations to visit relatives in California and Washington.

After retirement, Ethel became a very active member of the Red Hat Society. She thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with her “Red Hat” friends and participating in all of their events and activities. Ethel also enjoyed traveling with Lawrence in their retirement years on trips to Branson, Missouri, Florida, Texas, and Colorado. She always stayed in touch with her many friends and family members through long telephone conversations.

Ethel is survived by her sons, Larry (Sandy) Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa and Bob Johnson of Sioux City, Iowa; brother-in-law, Frank Hanning; sisters-in-law, Leona Towne and Bonnie Johnson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence; son, Randy; parents, Virgil and Magdalene Towne; sisters, Harriet Cornwell and Sharon Hanning; brother, Harold Towne, Sr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Carl and Edith Johnson; and many extended family members and friends.

Ethel will always be remembered and loved by her family and friends.

A private burial service was held at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
