Frederic T. Gruening
February 03, 1943 — February 25, 2026
Frederic Theodore Gruening, age 83, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.
Fred was born February 3, 1943, in Des Moines, IA to Opal Arvilla (Jarnagin) and Frederic S. Gruening.
Fred Gruening’s greatest joy in life was his family. He treasured time spent with loved ones and friends, whether gathered around a table, sharing stories, or simply enjoying one another’s company. Relationships meant everything to him, and he nurtured them with loyalty, kindness, and sincerity.
Above all, Fred’s deepest love was his wife of 63 years. The life they built together was his proudest accomplishment. From traveling side by side to quiet evenings at home with their two beloved dogs, he cherished every moment they shared. Their partnership was the foundation of his happiness.
Fred retired in 2004 from Regency Builders after 18 dedicated years as Director of Sales. Through his work in real estate and new construction, he didn’t just build homes — he built lifelong relationships. Clients became friends, colleagues became extended family, and his integrity earned him deep respect throughout the industry.
He found peace and contentment at Spirit Lake, Iowa, where he loved fishing and relaxing on his dock, watching the water and soaking in the quiet beauty of the lake. Those simple moments brought him genuine joy.
Fred’s life was defined by love, loyalty, hard work, and the relationships he built along the way. The memories he created with his family and friends will live on in their hearts forever.
He is survived by his children, Jeannie (Paul) Barnes, Debra (Doug) McGhee, Scott (Darla) Gruening, Teresa (Robert) Corbin; 12 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and 2 great great grandchildren.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte (LaRae) Gruening.
There will be a celebration of life on Saturday March 7, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 3020 E. 38th, Des Moines, IA 50317. There will be a luncheon following the service.
