Frederick Owen Davis, 71, passed away on April 24, 2024 while at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

He was born February 2, 1953 to his parents, Carl and Ernestine Davis in Walker, Iowa. Fred graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa in May 1971 and afterwards joining the Air Force. He was stationed first in Germany and then Holland. Fred was then assigned to Montana as a military guard. After returning from serving, Fred married Ann Huggins in 1974. They had two children, Hans and Amy. Fred and Ann divorced in 1982. After Fred’s time in the Air Force, he returned to Des Moines and enrolled at Drake University where he received a B.A. degree in Criminology. Fred started working for the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1986 as a prison guard in New Mexico. During this time, he married Jean Davis and they moved to Oregon where Fred worked until his retirement in 2006. In 2006, Fred and Jean then moved back to New Mexico. The couple separated and Fred’s health deteriorated after experiencing several strokes. Fred moved back to Des Moines, Iowa and eventually was admitted to the Iowa Veterans Home.

Fred was boisterous and witty. He could make friends easily. Fred was an avid fisherman. Anytime he had opportunity to fish he would be at a lake or river enjoying himself.

He is survived by his estranged wife, Jean; daughter, Amy; two grandchildren, Diane and Spencer; brothers, Eugene (Cyndee), and Steven (Julie); and many loving cousins.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Ernestine; and his son Hans.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 12:00 p.m. at Marquisville United Methodist Church, 5345 NE 14th Street in Des Moines. Fred has been laid to rest at Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
