Glenn Martin Hobin
January 02, 1951 — May 09, 2025
Glenn Martin Hobin, 74, of Ankeny, Iowa, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, at Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 2, 1951, in Hackensack, New Jersey, Glenn was the son of George and Frances Hobin. Glenn’s early years were marked by athleticism and determination, as he became a champion high school wrestler in northern New Jersey. He later attended college, where he followed his passion for psychology and eventually became a trained mental health provider.
His professional life spanned several fields. While Glenn is perhaps best known for his successful career in the early Silicon Valley tech scene, he was also a skilled mental health provider and an instructor at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Glenn was instrumental in the development of early Microsoft technologies, particularly as part of the marketing team and in the creation of PowerPoint. His work in the tech world reflected his keen intellect and innovative thinking, yet his greatest pride came from the roles of son and father, which he held close to his heart throughout his life.
A man of diverse interests, Glenn enjoyed traveling the world, meeting people, and developing a deep passion for astronomy. But above all, he treasured time spent with his family, creating memories that would last generations.
Glenn was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He shared 44 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Ruth Hobin. He is survived by his children, Grant (Katelyn) Hobin and Ilene (Steven) Harris; and his cherished grandchildren, Ernesto Carvajal, Aimee Carvajal, Saoirse Hobin, Grace Harris, Natalie Harris, and Adeline Harris. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol and Mary; beloved nieces and nephews; other loving relatives; and many special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Frances Hobin, and his daughter, Kristin Hobin-Carvajal.
Glenn will be remembered for his intellect, humor, generosity, and deep devotion to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, from his innovative contributions to technology to his enduring impact on those who knew and loved him.
A private burial will take place at Ashton Cemetery in Baxter, Iowa. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary-Holy Cross Catholic Church, 460 NW Washington, Ave., Elkhart, IA 50073 or Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW Walnut St., Ankeny, IA 50023 in loving memory of Glenn.
