Julia A. Mathews
July 12, 1943 — May 17, 2025
Julia Ann Mathews, age 81, of Pleasantville, Iowa, passed away peacefully while under hospice care on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
Julia, affectionately known as Grandma Charlie, was born July 12, 1943, in Indianola, Iowa to John and Anita (West) Lyon. She loved art, particularly painting, and was quite talented. Her skill was matched by her generosity as she was equally as likely to keep her creation as she was to give it away. She loved nature and animals, and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She had an impressive collection of hostas. Julia and her husband, Jerry traveled extensively around the United States, residing in many different places due to his work. In her younger years, she enjoyed fishing and was an avid bowler with a competitive spirit.
She is survived by her children, David (Leanette) Kristan Valen and Mary Katherine Valen; her brothers, James (Sue) Lyon and Richard Lyon; her grandchildren, Shawnee Valen, Dakota Valen, and Skylar Valen; great-grandchildren, Micheal Sudbrock, Ellajean Grenz, and Jerimiah Grenz; as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Julia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anita Lyon; her husband, Jerry Mathews; and her brother, John Lyon.
Following her husband, Jerry’s example, Julia has chosen to donate her body for anatomical and surgical study to assist with furthering others’ educations and improving future health care. They will eventually be laid to rest together. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the United Way, the Animal Rescue League, or any organization that helps with dementia care or research.
