James “Jim” Jackovich, 80, passed away October 9, 2025 at EveryStep Kavanagh House.

Jim was born August 30, 1945, in Centerville, Iowa to Frank and Tina (Rice) Jackovich. He was raised in the Rathbun area. Jim served in the United States Army Reserves for 6 years. On April 17, 1971, he married Shirley McDonald in Albia, Iowa. Jim worked in the food business all of his life. He began his career at HyVee, working his way up to manager of the meat department. Later, he worked as a meat broker for PDI. He had also worked for Daymon Worldwide and American Chef. Jim was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church and was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion and a trustee on the Northern Warren Fire Department.

When his children were younger, he volunteered his time as a youth coach. He most recently enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports and school activities. Jim took great pride in his manicured yard. He didn’t know a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone. People that didn’t know him may have been thrown off by his colorful vocabulary and one liners. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing, especially with his family in Northern Minnesota.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; the three wonderful children they were blessed with, Jennifer (Paul) Storbeck, Jason (Sonja) Jackovich and Jill (Adam) Mick; 12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a host of extended family and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Tina Jackovich and his granddaughter, Camryn Storbeck.

The family will greet friends on Sunday, October 19, 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the Rosary prayed at 5:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s Southtown Funeral Home, 5400 SW 9th Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, October 20th at 11:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 5711 SW 9th Street. A private family burial will be held at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Northern Warren Fire Department (NWFD) or EveryStep Hospice in loving memory of Jim.
