James Fred Kirkpatrick

James Fred Kirkpatrick passed away peacefully on Friday, September 12, 2025.

Jim was born May 19, 1931, in Indianola, Iowa, to Phyllis and Fred Kirkpatrick. He was the second of four children. Over the years his family moved often, but in 1953 Jim’s life changed when he met the love of his life, Barbara, in Waukee. The two were married on October 2, 1953, and shared 67 wonderful years together. Jim waited patiently—4 years, 3 months, and 1 day—to be reunited with Barb again.

Jim was known for his big heart and was like a second dad to many of Linda’s friends. He enjoyed time in his garage, riding motorcycles with Barb, camping, and traveling to Branson.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda and son-in-law, Darrell—who was not only a blessing, but the son they never had; two very special families, the Short family and Stephanie & Finnlee Shedd; his brother, George (Mary); and many nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barb; his parents; and two siblings.

The family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, Des Moines. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. Jim will be laid to rest at Elm Grove Cemetery in Des Moines
